The Starter Gardener - A Workshop for Beginners

From Tuesday, April 22, 2025 April 22, 2025 The Lodge at St Edward Park

Tuesdays | 2 PM - 3 PM | $55 Per Person*

Join us for an inspiring hands-on gardening experience designed for the curious beginner, led by The Lodge’s horticulturist and landscape designer, Ben Gerhardt. With a deep-rooted passion for the plants of the Pacific Northwest and a knack for making gardening approachable and fun, Ben brings expertise and enthusiasm to every session.

Enjoy a glass of locally crafted mead as Ben teaches you the fundamentals of growing plants from seed. You'll create biodegradable newspaper pots and plant three native species to take home—all while learning about soil composition, light conditions, and the essential process of “hardening off,” which prepares young plants for a thriving life outdoors.

Whether you're dreaming of your first home garden or simply looking to reconnect with nature, this workshop offers a joyful way to get your hands in the dirt and your mind inspired.

Meet Ben Gerhardt:

Ben’s journey into gardening began at Willows Lodge, where the surrounding gardens captured his imagination and ultimately inspired a career shift from the front desk to the flower bed. Under the mentorship of renowned horticulturist Teresa Sciglibaglio, Ben developed a keen eye for design and a deep appreciation for the role of native plants in sustainable landscapes.

Today, as Lead Gardener at The Lodge at St. Edward Park, Ben specializes in ornamental landscaping, focusing on naturalistic rockeries—rugged stone landscapes softened by the texture and color of Pacific Northwest flora. His approach combines thoughtful design with down-to-earth guidance, making gardening accessible, creative, and rewarding for all.
